Lead Planner

Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, WI

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, a state-wide non-profit Bicycle Advocacy and Education Organization, is seeking a Bicycle Transportation Planner. The Planner will serve as a project manager for all on-going planning contracts and securing future consulting based planning work.

This position requires experience in bicycle/pedestrian planning and its connection to broad based transportation and urban/community planning. Project management experience as a planning consultant is preferred. Must be proficient in the use of ESRI GIS and Microsoft software and have excellent writing and communication skills.

Preferred qualifications are a Bachelor's Degree in planning and 1-2 years of experience and a passion for bicycling.

The position is based out our Milwaukee office, but we will perform planning work across the State of Wisconsin so some travel will be required. Salary will be commensurate with experience and abilities and health insurance benefits, vacation, sick leave and flexible work schedule are offered – along with the opportunity to work for a great organization in a world-class cycling community that is pursuing platinum BFC status.

Business Manager

Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin - Madison, WI

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin is seeking an outgoing and experienced person to manage office operations, membership and oversee bookkeeping duties. Persons with bookkeeping and office management talents, along with great interpersonal and communication skills will find this an appealing position. Attention to detail and office organization skills are a must. A passion for bicycling is helpful.

Demonstrated experience with QuickBooks and basic bookkeeping practices required.  Past experience administering the operations of a small business or nonprofit is desired. Degree in business administration, finance or accounting very helpful.  Practical experience with databases also helpful.

The position is based in our Madison office, but will require the some administration and management of the Milwaukee office. Salary will be commensurate with experience and abilities.  Health insurance benefits, vacation, sick leave and flexible work schedule are offered – along with the opportunity to work for a great organization in a world-class cycling community.

Bicyclists Survey

Help us measure how many bicyclists there are in Milwaukee and why they ride by conducting the Milwaukee Bicyclist’s Survey. The survey is short and is given to willing bicyclists on the Oak Leaf Trail and/or local bike lanes. Survey dates and times are flexible—we just ask for a minimum of 3 hours of your time. This project is ongoing.

Trail Counts

Help in counting, documenting and finding new trails which are accessible to bikes and pedestrians around Milwaukee. Other responsibilities could also include performing traffic counts around various intersections and roadways in the city.

Curriculum Work

If you have a background in education and have an interest in helping out, the Bicycle Federation would like your expertise in looking over and revamping our curriculum. We use the curriculum for teaching bicycle safety to kids in school. New ideas are always welcome.

Ride Support

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin needs volunteers and ride marshalls for our bike rides. Stay tuned for Spring/Summer 2008 details.

Invasive Plant Control

Yes, weeding! This is an ongoing project. Our 10 acre prairie planting on the east side of the Menomonee River near the stadium segment of the trail needs help with controlling invasive species. Working with knowledgeable staff, volunteers can help out for a few hours on select Saturday mornings or prearranged weekdays in late spring, summer, or fall. Host a Stormwater Pollution Presentation

You are invited to learn about creative ways to curb water pollution by hosting one of Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers free stormwater presentations. FMR has trained 21 enthusiastic presenters to bring these colorful presentations to your garden club, neighborhood association, faith group, school, library, workplace or other community event. Presentations are each about 1 hour in length and focus on different ways to reduce stormwater runoff. They are:

Organize Your Own Cleanup

Recruit volunteers, scout the site location, bring cleanup supplies and run a cleanup site at a location along a river to clean the river and surrounding land.

Time Commitment: Recruit volunteers, scout locations, pickup trash bags and gloves at FMR, and attend cleanup.

Storm Drain Marking

This job helps to publicize the dangers of dumping pollutants into storm drains, which drain to our rivers and lakes. Volunteers mark storm drains with a marker that reads "No Dumping - Drains to River". Markers are also available in Spanish. This project is great for student groups. Students will learn about the connection between their streets and the rivers and lake, while also lending a hand to keep the rivers clean.

Time Commitment: Usually 2 hours of marking at a time. Weather must be above 60 degrees.

Administration Support

Learn to use our database system to enter donations and generate thank-you letters for our supporters. Available immediately.

Time Commitment: Approximately 1 hour per week, or less (we can split the job between volunteers).

Water Quality Monitor (Requires long-term commitment)

Volunteers learn to monitor water quality by testing for dissolved oxygen, temperature, PH, turbidity, and other indicators of river health. The volunteers each commit to monitoring a section of river or stream. This data is being used by the WDNR to assess the health of our local waterways. We will be recruiting and training more monitors in Spring 2008.

Time Commitment: Attend a full-day training and monitor at least once per month. Level I training will tentatively take place on May 24th, and Level II is TBA.

Adopt a Trail

Adopt a section of the Beerline Trail in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. As an adopter, you will visit the site to pick up trash and help with invasive species removal. This is a great way to become connected to the river.
