2010 Milwaukee Bike Plan Update

Over the past several years, the City of Milwaukee has taken significant steps to build bicycle opportunities, earning Milwaukee a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists.
The City recognizes that bike paths, bike lanes, parks and green space are critical components of a vibrant and healthy urban community.
Milwaukee's bikeway system offers numerous benefits:
- Biking is a great way to save money on short trips around town.
- Hopping on a bike is a fun way to exercise and increase physical fitness.
- The City can take advantage of federal funding opportunities to build both on-street and off-street bikeways.
- Bike paths and trails are proven to increase neighborhood connectivity and foster a stronger sense of community.
- Increasing biking in Milwaukee can lead to cleaner air and water.
The City's current bicycle transportation plan was completed in 1993, and has largely been implemented. The Bike Fed is partnering with the City of Milwaukee to update the Milwaukee Bike Plan. The 2010 update of this plan will be a complete rewrite of the document and will incorporate innovative recommendations to continue to improve and expand Milwaukee's bicycle system.
Recommendation areas include:
- Bike Facilities like expanded bike paths and lanes.
- Education through inspiring programs like Safe Routes to School.
- Encouragement to introduce the benefits of biking to more people.
- Enforcement to increase road safety for all users.
