Fracking & Lunch

Perhaps an odd combination. But not for water-lovers who want to learn about fracking for natural gas while enjoying a great lunch at Buca de Beppo Italian Restaurant! Brought to you by Milwaukee Riverkeeper's Senior Water Advocates' Network - SWAN.  All ages are welcome.

From 11 am to 2 pm, we will watch an hour of the documentary film, Gasland, then enjoy lunch and watch the last half hour of the film afterwards.  We’ll also discuss Wisconsin’s role in fracking.  Here we mine the sand that’s mixed with water and chemicals and shot into the earth to break up the hard rock that releases the gas.

Gasland documents filmmaker, Josh Fox’ cross-country odyssey to find out if the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing - or fracking - is actually safe.  This documentary film will tell you what fracking is and show you what’s gone horribly wrong with the procedure, from illness to hair loss to flammable water, and his inquiries lead him ever deeper into a web of secrets, lies, conspiracy, and contamination.

Itinerary:

11:00 am – 12:15 pm  Introduction and viewing of the Gasland documentary.
12:30 – 1:15 pm: Lunch
1:15 – 1:45 pm: View remaining portion of the Gasland documentary
1:45 – 2:00 pm: Brief discussion on sand mining in Wisconsin
